Former Ogun Central Senator, Iyabo Obasanjo, has said her decision to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and seek another term in the Senate is driven by her desire to revive the fortunes of the senatorial district.
Obasanjo, who served in the Senate between 2007 and 2011, spoke on Wednesday in Abeokuta during the launch of the PDP campaign for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections in Ogun State.
The former lawmaker, who is the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, said she was dissatisfied with what she described as the decline in the level of development and representation in Ogun Central since she left the Senate.
She said she returned to the PDP because she believes the district needs to regain the progress recorded during her previous tenure.
“My desire to take back our senatorial district to where it was when I represented it is the reason why I came back to the PDP, and take up the challenge of restoring our lost glories,” she said.
Obasanjo had briefly moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC) before returning to the PDP, where she is now the party’s senatorial candidate for Ogun Central.
She said her return to elective politics after 15 years was not motivated by personal ambition but by the need to address what she considers setbacks in the district’s development.
The campaign launch attracted PDP supporters from the three federal constituencies that make up Ogun Central.
Speaking at the event, the PDP governorship candidate in the state and chairman of the campaign committee, Ladi Adebutu, expressed confidence that the party could reclaim power and improve the welfare of Nigerians.
Adebutu identified poverty reduction as one of the party’s priorities and urged supporters to remain committed to the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections.
His running mate, Lateefat Sowunmi-Kolapo, meanwhile, advised voters to protect their ballots by remaining at polling units after voting and monitoring the counting and collation processes.
“Cast your vote and stay with it at the polling unit. Stand by your vote, follow them to the collation centre,” she said.
She also urged voters across Ogun Central to participate actively in the election and support PDP candidates at the various levels.
