Former National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Ladipo Johnson, has said former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is putting Nigeria’s unity above personal ambition.
NewsWatch Nigeria recalls that Kwankwaso, alongside former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reacting to the recent defection of the two political figures, Johnson, during an interview on Arise Television, said Kwankwaso will support Peter Obi because he believes that Nigeria’s unity is more important than personal ambition.
He said, “If you are not satisfied with what is happening in the country, there are other leaders from the South, and within our party we have Peter Obi.
“We have also seen that Kwankwaso has thrown his weight behind this decision, because he believes Nigeria’s unity is more important than personal ambition, and I dare say he will support Peter Obi as he begins this journey.”
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Faizu Alfindiki, has said many people in the North are surprised by the perceived political closeness between Kwankwaso and Peter Obi.
Alfindiki said Kwankwaso’s political direction had raised questions among some Northerners who expected him to focus more on building stronger unity among leaders in the region.
NewsWatch Nigeria reports that the politician made the remarks while speaking with journalists in Kano on Monday.
The APC stalwart, who is also a former Chairman of Kano Municipal Council, said the North needed stronger cooperation among its political leaders to protect its interests and strengthen its voice at the national level.
