Why your parents keep pressuring you to get married – Tomama

Popular comedian Tomama, popularly known as Datwarrigirl, has shared her opinion on why many parents constantly pressure their daughters to get married, saying poor communication is often the real issue.

In a video shared on her Instagram page, the comedienne said many women keep the painful experiences they face in relationships away from their parents, making it difficult for them to understand why they are still single.

According to her, parents would be less likely to pressure their daughters if they knew the emotional challenges they were dealing with.

“Ladies, the reason why your parents are stressing and disturbing you for marriage is because you don’t tell them what you go through in that relationship. Una no dey tell them wetin una eyes dey see. Try dey talk, because me, I dey tell my mama everything,” she said.

Tomama recalled breaking down in tears after a painful breakup and calling her mother to explain what had happened. Rather than urging her to find another partner, she said her mother encouraged her to take time to heal.

She added that she always keeps her mother informed about anyone who comes into her life, a habit she believes has made her family more understanding and reduced the pressure to settle down.

“Any person that comes into my life, I tell her. Who go like make him pikin dey cry? Them go dey tell you, ‘No rush oo, abeg,’” she added.

Her remarks have since generated conversations online, with many Nigerians agreeing that open communication with parents can ease the pressure surrounding marriage, while others shared different views on family expectations and relationships.
