The United States is preparing to expand its military operations against Iran by targeting oil tankers linked to the country across international waters. According to officials cited by The Wall Street Journal, this move could significantly widen the ongoing maritime crackdown amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The development comes at a time when Iran has reportedly attacked several commercial vessels and claimed tighter control over the crucial shipping route. The US believes such actions threaten global oil supply and regional stability.
What The New Plan Aims To Achieve
The proposed plan is part of a broader strategy under President Donald Trump to increase economic pressure on Iran. The goal is to push Tehran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz and making concessions in ongoing nuclear negotiations.

Trump recently claimed that Iran had agreed to transfer its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to the United States, a statement denied by Iranian officials. Key issues in the talks include how long Iran would pause uranium enrichment and whether it would regain access to frozen financial assets.
The United States Central Command has already taken steps by turning back 23 vessels attempting to leave Iranian ports. The next phase could allow US forces to track and seize Iran-linked ships globally, including those suspected of transporting oil or weapons.
Rising Pressure Under ‘Economic Fury’
The expanded campaign, referred to as “Economic Fury,” may also involve the US Indo-Pacific Command. The White House believes these measures could help push both sides toward a peace agreement, even as the current ceasefire is set to expire soon.
Talks held recently in Pakistan failed to produce a breakthrough, and no new negotiations have been scheduled. Meanwhile, both sides appear to be preparing for possible escalation.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said forces are ready for action if diplomacy fails, though there is reluctance to deploy ground troops. Officials have warned that targeting Iran’s infrastructure could trigger retaliatory strikes in the region.
