In October 2017, 19-year-old Kayla Hayes from South Carolina suffered a horrific attack after refusing to reconcile with her ex-boyfriend, Seth Aaron Fleury.
According to reports, Fleury became angry during the confrontation and allegedly tried to force a kiss on her. When she resisted, he bit down on her lower lip with such force that most of it was torn off.
Kayla reportedly picked up the detached portion of her lip from the ground before being rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment.
Following the attack, Fleury pleaded guilty to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. He was later sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Kayla underwent several reconstructive surgeries as part of her recovery. Since then, she has used her experience to raise awareness about domestic violence and support other survivors by sharing her story.
