De Norsemen Kclub International (DNKI) Chief Oliver Ityohegh: reveals On this significant day, we join millions of Nigerians and the global labour community in recognizing the resilience, dedication, and invaluable contributions of workers across all sectors who remain the backbone of national development despite prevailing economic challenges.
The theme for the 2026 Workers’ Day, “Ensuring Decent Work and Living Wages in a Challenging Economy”, underscores the urgent need to prioritize workers’ welfare in the face of rising inflation, economic instability, and declining purchasing power. It highlights the responsibility of governments and employers to guarantee not just employment, but dignified work conditions, fair compensation, and sustainable livelihoods.
The International President of DNKI, Chief Oliver Ityohegh, notes that Nigerian workers continue to demonstrate unwavering commitment and patriotism, often working under difficult conditions with limited resources. He emphasizes that workers remain the “beating heart of economic activity,” and must therefore be valued, empowered, and adequately rewarded.
DNKI calls on the Federal Government, state governments, and private sector employers to take decisive and measurable steps to improve the welfare of workers across the country. Specifically, we urge:
– A comprehensive review and upward adjustment of wages to reflect current economic realities, ensuring that workers’ take-home pay can truly “take them home.”
– Immediate payment of all outstanding allowances and entitlements, recognizing that these benefits form a critical part of workers’ livelihoods.
– Improvement of working conditions across both public and private sectors, in line with global best practices.
– Institutionalization of fair remuneration policies that protect workers from exploitation and ensure equity in compensation.
We reiterate that no nation can achieve sustainable growth without a motivated and fairly treated workforce.
Workers are not merely participants in the economy they are its driving force and most valuable asset.
Furthermore, DNKI emphasizes the importance of tackling corruption and inefficiencies within labour and administrative systems. Transparent governance and accountability are essential to ensuring that resources meant for workers’ welfare are not diverted or mismanaged.
As an organization committed to social justice and national development, DNKI reaffirms its dedication to advocating for workers’ rights, promoting welfare initiatives, and supporting policies that enhance productivity through improved living standards. We will continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to champion reforms that empower Nigerian workers and strengthen the socio-economic fabric of the nation.
