Morocco delivered an impressive second-half display to defeat Canada 3-0 in the opening Round of 16 fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, advancing to the quarter-finals in commanding fashion.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the encounter began on a cautious note, with both sides showing discipline and determination as they battled for control in midfield.
Canada attempted to impose themselves early, while Morocco relied on quick passing combinations and movement in attack to create openings.
However, clear-cut chances were limited as both teams remained compact defensively.
Morocco received the first caution of the match in the 20th minute when Redouane Halhal was shown a yellow card for a late challenge.
Two minutes later, the North Africans were forced into an early adjustment as Soufiane Rahimi came on to replace Ismael Saibari.
In spite of the substitution, Morocco continued to push forward, with Achraf Hakimi playing an influential role down the right flank and linking up effectively with his teammates.

Hakimi was booked in the 40th minute, while Canada’s Richie Laryea also entered the referee’s book moments later following a physical challenge.
Jonathan David was cautioned in the 43rd minute as tensions increased toward the end of the opening period.
Morocco midfielder Azzedine Ounahi picked up a yellow card in the 45th minute, while Bilal El Khannouss was also shown a booking in added time as the first half ended goalless.
The scoreline remained level at the interval, Morocco appeared the more threatening side, enjoying better possession and looking more dangerous whenever they moved into the attacking third.
Canada started the second half hoping to gain momentum, but they found it difficult to contain Morocco’s pace and movement.
Their problems increased in the 49th minute when Luc De Fougerolles was booked for a foul, and just one minute later Morocco finally made their dominance count.
Ounahi broke the deadlock in the 50th minute with a well-taken finish after receiving a precise assist from Hakimi, sending Moroccan supporters into celebration.
The goal gave the African side greater confidence as they dictated the tempo of the match and prevented Canada from building meaningful attacks.
Morocco refreshed their squad in the 63rd minute, introducing Sofyan Amrabat and Chemsdine Talbi in place of Bouaddi and El Khannouss to maintain their intensity in midfield.

Canada responded by bringing on Cyle Larin for Tani Oluwaseyi in an attempt to strengthen their attacking options.
However, Morocco remained organised and disciplined, frustrating Canada’s efforts to find an equaliser.
Larin was shown a yellow card in the 67th minute as Canada’s frustrations became increasingly evident.
Canada made additional substitutions in the 79th minute, introducing Ali Ahmed and Jacob Shaffelburg for fresh energy, but Morocco continued to control possession and looked dangerous on the counterattack.
NAN reports that Morocco eventually doubled their advantage in the 82nd minute through Ounahi, who completed his brace after being set up brilliantly by Brahim Diaz.
The midfielder showed composure inside the penalty area before placing his effort beyond the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Morocco made further changes in the 87th minute, introducing Mehdi Saadane and El Mourabet, while Ounahi left the field after producing one of his finest performances of the tournament.
