Xabi Alonso has officially resumed duties as the new coach of Chelsea Football Club, following his appointment in May.
The 44-year-old Spaniard joins the London club with a wealth of managerial experience, having previously led clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid.
His appointment fills the vacancy created by the sacking of Liam Rosenior.
Chelsea will be hoping to draw on Alonso’s experience as they look to bounce back from a underwhelming campaign last season, one that saw them miss out on European football altogether after finishing 10th in the Premier League.
The club shared a video on Thursday showing Alonso arriving at the training ground, accompanied by the messages “Xabi Alonso arrives at Cobham,” “This is where it starts,” and “A new chapter awaits.”
Alonso is far from unfamiliar with Stamford Bridge, having played there during his time as a Liverpool player.
He famously scored the only goal in a 1-0 Premier League win that brought an end to Chelsea’s remarkable 86-match unbeaten home league record.
He also converted a penalty in the dramatic 4-4 draw during the second leg of the 2008/2009 UEFA Champions League quarter-final.
Should things go according to plan, Alonso is expected to remain in charge at Chelsea until the summer of 2030.
