Nigerian teenager Zadok Yohanna is expected to remain with the senior squad at Brighton & Hove Albion next season after reports linking him with a loan move were dismissed by sources close to the player.
The 18-year-old winger recently completed a high-profile transfer from Swedish side AIK in a deal reportedly worth up to €28 million, making him one of the most expensive teenage signings involving an African player.
Brighton beat competition from several top European clubs, including Chelsea FC, Manchester City, Newcastle United and RB Leipzig, to secure his services.
Brighton planning first-team pathway
Recent reports had suggested Yohanna could be sent to Spain on loan to gain experience, but those claims have been rejected.
According to Footy-Africa, a source close to the player said:
“The agreement is to keep the player in the first team. He has been given a personal training programme and has already started pre-season work ahead of the club’s official resumption.”
“He’s not going on loan, what is being reported is fake news.”
The source also confirmed that Yohanna’s registration process in England has been completed.
Tough competition awaits
While the decision signals confidence in the youngster’s potential, breaking into coach Fabian Hurzeler’s starting XI may prove challenging.
The Seagulls already possess strong attacking options, including Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma, Georginio Rutter and Solly March.
Moving from Sweden’s top flight to the intensity of the Premier League also represents a significant step up for the Nigerian prospect.
Conference League could offer opportunities
Brighton are set to compete in European competition next season, creating additional fixtures and rotation opportunities across the campaign.
