Tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran have sharply escalated after a heated phone call between Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu over Israel’s continued military strikes in Lebanon.
According to a report by Axios, Trump strongly criticised Netanyahu during the call on Monday, expressing anger over the ongoing bombardment and rising civilian casualties. The report, citing US officials, said Trump used unusually harsh language and warned that Israel’s actions could increase its global isolation.
A US official told Axios that Trump accused Netanyahu of being “ungrateful” and even said his political survival depended on American support. He also reportedly warned that continued strikes, especially threats targeting Beirut, would worsen Israel’s international image. Another source claimed Trump repeatedly questioned Netanyahu’s actions, asking what he was trying to achieve.
Why is Lebanon at the centre of this crisis?
The situation in Lebanon has become a key factor in wider regional tensions. Israel has been targeting positions linked to Hezbollah, but the strikes have also caused civilian deaths and damage to infrastructure.
Iran has reacted strongly, making it clear that any ceasefire in Lebanon is essential for continuing negotiations with the US. Iranian state media reported that talks with Washington have now been suspended due to the ongoing attacks. Earlier, Iran had also warned it could completely withdraw from negotiations if the situation did not improve.
What did Netanyahu say after the call?
After the call, Netanyahu released a public statement maintaining a firm stance. He said Israel would continue its military operations in southern Lebanon and would also strike Beirut if Hezbollah attacks did not stop.
“Our position remains the same,” Netanyahu said, signalling no immediate change in policy.
However, US officials quoted in the Axios report suggested a different picture behind closed doors. One official claimed Trump had effectively “steamrolled” Netanyahu during the conversation, with the Israeli leader agreeing to manage the situation carefully.
Is a ceasefire or deal still possible?
The developments have raised serious doubts about ongoing US-Iran talks. With Iran linking negotiations directly to a ceasefire in Lebanon, diplomatic progress now depends on whether the violence slows down.
