2026: Osun Civil Society Group Petitions Western Embassies Over Political Killings, Seeks Sanctions

A coalition of civil society groups in Osun State has submitted petitions to several Western embassies detailing alleged political killings in the state and urging the international community to consider sanctions and visa bans against individuals found culpable.

In the petitions, the coalition listed multiple killings it said targeted members of the Accord Party.

The group also raised concerns over branded vehicles and persons it described as political thugs allegedly linked to the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, who it said were filmed parading through towns and shooting sporadically.

The coalition claimed its field data showed that six PDP/Accord members were allegedly killed by persons it identified as APC supporters during the February 17, 2025, local government crisis in the state.

According to the coalition, the only incident in which an APC member was killed was that of Hon. Remi Abbas.

It alleged that while police are investigating the Remi Abbas case, the other six cases involving Accord/PDP members have not received similar attention.

Meanwhile, the coalition also alleged that a fresh killing occurred in Ikire, which it blamed on opposition thugs.

In its submission, the coalition provided names and party affiliations of Accord members it said were killed and maimed in the last two months, describing the development as a threat to next month’s August 15 governorship election.

The coalition urged Western governments and the international community to pay attention to developments in Osun and consider sanctions and visa bans where necessary.
