The meeting, which took place amid growing political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections, had initially sparked speculation that Obi may have approached Amaechi regarding a possible step-down arrangement in the presidential race.
While such claims have circulated widely, Senator Victor Umeh, an ADC chieftain, has moved to downplay the narrative, describing it as a misrepresentation of routine interactions among aspirants.
Speaking during an appearance on Prime Time on ARISE Television, Umeh said the meeting should be seen within the broader context of ongoing consultations.
“Obi’s visit to Amaechi was a noble one with good intention. You have to talk to your opponent,” he said.
He also dismissed suggestions that Obi “begged” Amaechi to step down, describing such claims as “condescending” and inconsistent with Obi’s political disposition.
“Saying Peter Obi went to beg Amaechi to step down for him is very condescending. Obi is not someone who will beg you for what he wants; Amaechi knows that,” Umeh added.
Despite the clarification, differing accounts surrounding the meeting have continued to fuel speculation about possible alignments and negotiations within the ADC, where multiple high-profile figures are believed to be positioning ahead of the party’s presidential ticket.
