In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Adelabu said his exit would take effect from April 30, 2026, to ensure a smooth and orderly transition in the ministry. The letter was routed through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Adelabu expressed appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve, describing his appointment as both a privilege and a rare honour.
He noted that his tenure enabled him to contribute to national development, particularly in advancing reforms in the power sector, which he described as critical to Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic transformation.
“I write with a deep sense of honour and profound gratitude to formally tender my resignation,” he stated, adding that the timing of his decision was guided by legal and political considerations.
The former minister said his decision was driven by his determination to fully focus on his governorship ambition in Oyo State, an aspiration he traced back to 2016 during his time as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
He added that his resignation aligns with the provisions of the Amended Electoral Act 2026, which requires political office holders seeking elective positions to step down.
