The viral Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which began in India as a political satire, has now crossed borders and made its presence felt in Pakistan’s social media space. What started as a humorous online idea has now turned into a growing digital trend, inspiring multiple similar accounts across the border.
CJP, launched on May 16 in India, quickly gained massive popularity online. Within a week, it attracted millions of followers and became one of the most talked-about satirical movements on social media. The idea behind the movement is inspired by the cockroach.
Pakistan sees rise of similar ‘Cockroach’ political pages
Soon after CJP’s rise in India, Pakistani social media users began creating their own versions of the movement. Names such as Cockroach Awami Party, Cockroach Awami League, and Muttahida Cockroach Movement are now appearing online. As of filing this story, the account had crossed 1,500 followers.
One of the pages describes itself as “A political front of the youth, by the youth, for Pakistan.” Another bio states, “Jinhein system ne cockroach samjha, hum unhi awaam ki awaaz hain” (We are the voice of those people whom the system considered cockroaches).
These pages use branding similar to the Indian version but with a green-and-white theme, subtly positioning themselves against mainstream Pakistani political parties like PTI, PML-N, and PPP.
Who started the original Cockroach Janta Party?
The original Cockroach Janta Party in India was founded by Abhijeet Dipke, a 30-year-old Indian student at Boston University. He has previously worked with the Aam Aadmi Party as a political communications strategist. The movement also has a manifesto and an official website.
The idea reportedly gained attention after comments made during a Supreme Court hearing by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, who compared unemployed youth and activists to “cockroaches” and “parasites.” He later clarified that his remarks referred to individuals using fake degrees.
Despite not being a formal political party, CJP has already crossed over 20 million Instagram followers in less than a week.
