Police in Anambra State have arrested a 32-year-old woman after her seven-year-old daughter was allegedly subjected to severe physical abuse in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area.
The Anambra State Police Command said it received a report of the alleged abuse on Sunday, September 13, 2026, following which security personnel and concerned residents in the Ibollo community, Awada-Obosi, rescued the child.
The victim, identified as Oluebube Ofoma, was reportedly found with severe bodily injuries.
Police said preliminary information indicated that the child had allegedly been subjected to severe physical abuse, including injuries reportedly inflicted with a hot knife.
The child’s mother, Mrs Ogechi Ofoma, was arrested following the intervention by community security personnel and residents.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has commenced collaboration with the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare to ensure that the child receives urgent medical treatment, protection and necessary welfare support.
The Police Command commended the Ibollo Community security personnel and residents for their vigilance and swift intervention, saying their actions helped prevent further harm to the child and enabled immediate police action.
The Command assured the public that the investigation would be thorough and professional, with the welfare, safety and best interests of the child remaining paramount.
It also pledged to work with relevant agencies to protect vulnerable persons and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable in accordance with the law.
