The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has confirmed the death of a dispatch rider following a fatal road crash at Otedola Bridge, marking the second such incident in less than 24 hours along the busy corridor.
The tragic accident, which occurred inward the Secretariat axis near the Ogudu Toll Gate, involved a heavy-duty Volvo truck and a dispatch motorcycle.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the impact of the collision led to the instant death of the rider, further raising concerns over the safety of dispatch operators on major highways.
He said LASTMA operatives on routine patrol responded swiftly, securing and cordoning off the scene to prevent secondary accidents, particularly given the heavy vehicular movement along the route.
Adebayo added that the remains of the deceased were handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), while officers from the Alausa Police Division provided security to ensure a smooth evacuation process.
He noted that the affected vehicles, the articulated truck and the motorcycle, were promptly removed by a tow truck, allowing for the gradual restoration of traffic flow.
Despite the quick intervention, the incident triggered significant traffic congestion, with gridlock stretching towards the Berger axis.
Adebayo said LASTMA officials worked assiduously to ease the backlog and restore normal vehicular movement within the shortest possible time.
He quoted the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, as expressing deep condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the incident as painful and unfortunate.
Bakare-Oki, he said, stressed the need for heightened vigilance and strict compliance with traffic regulations, particularly among operators of articulated vehicles and dispatch riders.
Adebayo stated that LASTMA remains committed to working with relevant stakeholders to intensify advocacy aimed at reducing road fatalities and promoting a sustainable safety culture across Lagos State.
