Activities of the ongoing Law Week activities of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has stalled the planned arraignment of Mr. Kelly Okungbowa, a political ally of Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo.
Okungbowa, who is popularly known as Ebo Stone, was reportedly arrested by operatives of the Edo State Police Command, for allegedly slapping a police officer on duty.
He was arrested on May 30, 2026, along the Upper Sakponba axis of Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, where he was said to have assaulted a police officer carrying out lawful duties.
Police sources disclosed that the suspect was due to be charged before a court this week, but court proceedings were disrupted by the annual Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Law Week programme, resulting in a delay in the suspect’s arraignment.
The source who pleaded anonymity, confirmed that the suspect had been granted bail but, the matter would proceed to court once normal judicial activities resume.
”The suspect has been granted administrative bail, but he will be charged to court as soon as regular court proceedings resume,” the source said.
Efforts to reach the Edo State Police Command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, for comments were unsuccessful.
However, Ikoedem had earlier confirmed Okungbowa’s arrest and reiterated the command’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, stressing that no individual is above the law.
She also urged members of the public to respect police officers while they carry out their lawful responsibilities.
