The Management of Atiba University Oyo has expressed immense delight and pride following the outstanding performance of the institution at the 2026 Southwest Inter-Chapter Debate Competition organized by the National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies (NASELS).
The prestigious competition, hosted by the University of Ibadan on Friday, 22nd May, 2026, brought together participants from six universities across Oyo State, namely: Koladaisi University, Ibadan; University of Ibadan; Atiba University Oyo; and Federal University of Education, Special, Oyo. Ajayi Crowther University Oyo and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomoso, though expected, did not participate in the competition.
Atiba University Oyo was represented by Fasasi Fatimah Adeola, Mulero Great Ayomide (Speaker), Olukitibi Pricillia Oluwasemilore (Speaker), and Adediran Bidemi Margaret.
Following remarkable presentations, exceptional teamwork, intellectual depth, and impressive debating skills demonstrated by the students, Atiba University Oyo advanced to the final stage of the competition where the institution competed against the host university, the University of Ibadan. At the end of the keenly contested final round, Atiba University Oyo emerged overall winner with an outstanding final score of 72.50%.
By virtue of this remarkable victory, Atiba University Oyo has also secured the honour of representing Oyo State at the forthcoming West Coast Annual Debate Convention scheduled to hold later in the year.
Reacting to the achievement, the Founder and President of the University, James Adesokan Ojebode, PhD, JP, expressed great joy and satisfaction over the students’ accomplishment, describing the victory as another clear testimony to the university’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence, character formation, leadership development, and intellectual advancement.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Sunday Olawale Okeniyi, also commended the students for distinguishing themselves among their peers across Oyo State, particularly for emerging victorious against the host institution at the final stage of the competition. According to the Vice Chancellor, the feat has further enhanced the reputation and visibility of the university within the Nigerian academic community.
The management equally applauded the dedication, discipline, confidence, eloquence, and resilience displayed by the students throughout the competition. While appreciating the efforts of the Dean of Student Affairs, the Department of English and Literary Studies, members of staff, coaches, and all supporters whose guidance and encouragement contributed significantly to the success recorded, the Management reaffirmed its continuous commitment to supporting academic, literary, and co-curricular activities capable of developing students into confident, articulate, innovative, and globally competitive graduates.
The University further congratulated the students for making the institution proud and encouraged them to sustain the spirit of excellence, hard work, discipline, and teamwork in all future engagements as they prepare to represent Oyo State at the West Coast Annual Debate Convention.
This remarkable achievement once again underscores Atiba University Oyo’s growing reputation as a centre of academic excellence, leadership development, intellectual creativity, and transformational education in Nigeria.
