Bago Mourns Death Of NPC Chairman, Aminu Yusuf

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has mourned the death of the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf, describing his passing as a great shock and a colossal loss to Niger State and Nigeria.

In a condolence message issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, on Friday, Bago said Yusuf’s vast experience, competence and commitment to public service would be greatly missed, particularly at a crucial time when the country is preparing for the long-awaited national population and housing census.

The governor said Nigeria had lost an icon whose wealth of knowledge in demographic research, data management and policy implementation would have contributed significantly to national planning and development.

Bago also extended his heartfelt condolences to Yusuf’s family, urging them to remain strong during the difficult period.

He described the late NPC chairman as a dedicated family man who was compassionate and down to earth, adding that his death had deprived the state of “a rare gem and one of the finest brains in Niger State.”

“Farmer Umaru Bago prays that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings, illuminate and widen his grave, and grant him entry into Aljannat Firdaus,” the statement said.

The governor further prayed that Allah accept Yusuf’s good deeds and reward him abundantly even in death.

Yusuf was appointed Chairman of the NPC by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2025 following Bago’s recommendation. He was subsequently confirmed by the Senate in October 2025 and assumed office in December of the same year.

The late Yusuf, who held the traditional title of Talban Wushishi, had expressed plans to conduct a credible and technology-driven national population and housing census before his death.

Bago said his demise had come at a time when his expertise was needed to advance preparations for the census.
