India could sign a major defence agreement with Indonesia during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit next week. The proposed BrahMos supersonic cruise missile deal has been under discussion for a long time and is now believed to be in its final stage. If signed, it will become another major success for India’s defence exports while also strengthening New Delhi’s strategic presence in Southeast Asia.

PM Modi is scheduled to visit Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand next week. Among these visits, the Indonesia trip is expected to attract the most attention because of the possible missile agreement. The deal would also deepen defence ties between the two countries and expand India’s role as a defence supplier in the Indo-Pacific region.

Why is the BrahMos deal with Indonesia important?

If the agreement is finalised, Indonesia will become the third Southeast Asian country to operate the BrahMos missile system after the Philippines and Vietnam. Reports also suggest that Malaysia and Thailand have shown interest in the missile. If more such deals are signed, India could establish a strong network of BrahMos operators across strategically important parts of Southeast Asia.

The discussions with Indonesia are reportedly in the final phase. Both countries have also formed a Defence Industry Cooperation Committee to promote technology transfer, joint research and stronger defence supply chains.

How could the deal impact China and the South China Sea?

The possible agreement comes at a time when China is expanding its military presence in the South China Sea. The region is one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes, handling trillions of dollars worth of global trade every year. It is also claimed by several countries, including China, Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia.

China has built artificial islands and strengthened its military infrastructure in the disputed waters. Countries in the region are therefore looking to improve their coastal defence capabilities. High-speed anti-ship missiles like BrahMos could help them strengthen maritime security and improve their ability to protect strategic sea routes.
