US President Donald Trump has said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has requested a meeting with him at the White House. Trump said the meeting could take place as early as next week after he returns from the NATO summit, although Israeli officials believe it may happen the following week due to scheduling.
Speaking on Saturday, Trump said he and Netanyahu share a good relationship. Referring to himself, Trump remarked, “We get along very good. [Netanyahu] knows who the boss is,” according to reports.
If the meeting goes ahead, it will be the first face-to-face discussion between Trump and Netanyahu since their Situation Room meeting in February. During that earlier meeting, Netanyahu reportedly presented a plan for launching a joint military campaign against Iran.
According to Netanyahu’s office, the Israeli leader spoke with Trump on Friday to congratulate the United States on the 250th anniversary of its Independence Day. The two leaders also agreed to meet in the US in the near future.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said Netanyahu praised the United States as a guarantor of global freedom and highlighted the strong relationship between the two countries. Both leaders agreed to arrange a meeting soon.
Why have tensions grown between Trump and Netanyahu?
Despite plans for another meeting, reports suggest relations between Trump and Netanyahu have become more complicated in recent months. People close to Trump are said to be increasingly sceptical of the Israeli prime minister following their February talks.
A US official reportedly said that several of Trump’s closest advisers believe Netanyahu had been “wrong about everything.” Last month, Trump was also reported to have criticised Netanyahu during a phone call over Israel’s military escalation in Lebanon, allegedly calling him “crazy” and accusing him of being ungrateful.
How have their policy differences widened?
Trump and Netanyahu have reportedly disagreed over several major issues, including national security, foreign policy and the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Their differences have also sparked debate within the Republican Party, with some MAGA supporters questioning Trump’s relationship with Israel.
Last month, Trump signed a memorandum extending the ceasefire with Iran while restarting nuclear talks. He also urged Netanyahu to reduce Israeli military operations in Lebanon and support a framework agreement that would include an initial withdrawal from southern Lebanon.
