Boko Haram has released an obituary video for one of its cameramen and raid commanders, Abu Salim al-Barnawi, who was killed by Nigerian troops during a failed attack on a military base in Borno State.
The three-minute, three-second video, obtained by Punch on Wednesday, was narrated in Arabic and showed the late insurgent operating a camera and taking part in several operations carried out by the terrorist group.
Acting Military Information Officer of the North-East Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, Capt. Muhammed Goni, who shared the video, said Abu Salim al-Barnawi previously led terrorist raids into Cameroon before joining Boko Haram’s media wing.
According to the accompanying text released by the military, the terrorist was killed during an attempted assault on a Nigerian military camp last week.
The statement read, “Boko Haram terrorist has put out an obituary of a dead raid commander and videographer, Abu Salim al-Barnawi.
“He was smoked last week by the Nigerian Army when the terrorist group attacked a Nigerian military camp. He was the cameraman. He previously led raids into Cameroon before joining the media wing of the terrorist group.”
Earlier, on July 12, troops of Operation Hadin Kai neutralised an Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) cameraman during a failed infiltration attempt by terrorists in Cross Kauwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
Capt. Goni had disclosed that intelligence materials recovered during the operation pointed to the presence of three foreign facilitators within the terrorist network, including a Palestinian Arab serving as a trainer and a Moroccan Arab working as a medical doctor for the group.
He said the terrorists had attempted to infiltrate the troops’ position under the cover of darkness with the aim of looting cholera medical supplies but were repelled by the soldiers.
The military also recovered a Sony camcorder, several rounds of PKT and 7.62mm Special ammunition, terrorist uniforms and other combat equipment during the operation.
