Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has rejected the outcome of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election, describing the process as flawed and inconsistent with the party’s democratic principles.
Amaechi made his position known on his X handle, where he said he could not accept what he described as “concocted results” from the exercise.
He maintained that he would only recognise the outcome if the process was free, fair, and transparent, insisting that the conduct of the primary fell short of those standards.
“I had initially stated that I will only accept the outcome of the primaries if the process was free, fair, and transparent, and I stand by my word,” he said.
The former Rivers State governor alleged that a large portion of party members were disenfranchised during the exercise, questioning the credibility of the results.
“There’s no way that about eighty percent of members of the party were not allowed to vote, and you expect me to accept such results,” he said.
Amaechi warned that the ADC risks losing credibility if it fails to uphold internal democracy, adding that the party must avoid repeating the same practices it often criticises in others.
He also drew comparisons with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that the ADC should not engage in the same practices it condemns.
“A party that criticizes the APC and INEC for vote buying, rigging and writing of results cannot be engaged in the same thing,” he said.
He further stressed that the party was meant to serve as a platform for accountability and inclusion, warning that failure to conduct credible primaries undermines its mission.
“The whole idea of the ADC was to give the Nigerian people a platform, to amplify the voices of the downtrodden,” he added.
Amaechi maintained that he would not accept any result that does not reflect the genuine will of party members, insisting that internal democracy must be respected.
