Kwankwaso shared his reaction in a post on his official X account on July 7, 2026, after Sheriff claimed that northern voters would not support Obi in the 2027 presidential election. Sheriff had argued that Obi’s actions during his tenure as governor of Anambra State would make it difficult for him to secure votes from the region.
Rejecting that assertion, Kwankwaso maintained that no individual has the authority to decide how northerners should vote. To support his position, Kwankwaso pointed to Peter Obi’s performance in the 2023 presidential election, noting that the former Anambra governor received about 2.8 million votes across the northern states despite it being his first presidential contest. He said the result demonstrated that Obi already enjoys considerable support in the region and could perform strongly again in the 2027 election.
In his post, Kwankwaso wrote: “For the record, in his first outing on the presidential ballot, Mr. Obi secured approximately 2.8 million votes in the region, a remarkable achievement that cannot be dismissed lightly.”
