“Davido was the target” – Osun Police confirms gunmen attack on Governor Adeleke’s convoy

The Osun State Police Command has confirmed that singer Davido was reportedly the target of an attack on the convoy of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on Wednesday, August 19.

Security escorts attached to the governor reportedly engaged unidentified men in a gun duel during Adeleke’s visit to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, shortly after he received his certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Davido and the governor’s children were reportedly in the convoy when the incident occurred, with pandemonium breaking out after unknown gunmen allegedly began shooting sporadically at the convoy.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, said preliminary investigation indicated that members of the Eye Confraternity were after Davido.

“One Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as ‘Small Rugged’, an ex convict, a suspected notorious thug and a member of eye confraternity allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was resisted by members of his security Team.

Ojelabi said the confrontation attracted other suspected gang members in the area, who allegedly blocked the palace entrance and obstructed the governor’s convoy.

He added that the suspected gang members later left the area but allegedly shot a 60-year-old man identified as Tajudeen Yusuf at Itaolokan area of Osogbo.

“Upon receiving the information, the police immediately mobilised a patrol team to the scene, where the victim was found lying in a pool of blood. He was promptly rushed to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, for medical attention. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead by the doctors on duty.”

The police spokesperson said the command has commenced a full-scale investigation and intensified efforts to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects.

The incident comes shortly after the conclusion of the Osun State governorship election, during which Davido actively campaigned for his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, who emerged victorious and secured a second term in office.
