A deaf Chinese woman has sparked reactions online after a video surfaced showing her confrontation with immigration officials at a Ghana border post over a passport requirement.
According to reports accompanying the video, the woman was informed by immigration officers that she needed a valid passport before she could cross the border. The situation reportedly escalated when she became upset and began recording the officers with her phone.
Using sign gestures and captions to communicate her side of the story, the woman alleged that some officers were mocking her and refusing to properly address her concerns until she started filming the encounter.
She claimed that the attitude of the officials changed after they noticed she was recording, saying they began acting more serious about the situation. In the video, some officers could also be seen taking pictures of her during the interaction.
The footage has generated debate online, with some people calling for better treatment of persons with disabilities at public service points, while others have pointed out that border regulations require travellers to present the necessary documents before crossing.
Ghana’s immigration regulations require persons entering or leaving the country to produce travel documents for inspection.
The exact location of the border incident and the outcome of the disagreement remain unclear. The video has, however, renewed conversations about customer service and how some of these officers engage with people who have special communication needs.
