The Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) has adopted Barr. Samuel M. Memeh as its consensus presidential candidate ahead of the forthcoming general elections, following the successful conduct of the party’s presidential primary election across the federation.
The exercise, which took place under the supervision of party officials and in the presence of representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was described by the party as peaceful, transparent, and in line with constitutional provisions and electoral guidelines.
Delegates accredited for the exercise participated in the affirmation process that culminated in the emergence of Memeh as the party’s standard bearer.
Speaking shortly after the affirmation, party leaders said the consensus arrangement reflected the unity and collective resolve within the DLA to present a formidable front in the next elections.
In a statement issued by the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party on Friday, the DLA commended aspirants, delegates, stakeholders, and members for what it described as their “maturity, unity, and commitment to democratic values throughout the process.”
“The emergence of Barr. Samuel M. Memeh, as the consensus candidate, reflects the collective resolve of the Party to move forward with a united front in pursuit of credible leadership and national transformation,” the statement read.
The party further reiterated its commitment to issue-based politics and internal democracy, stressing that it would continue to pursue policies aimed at improving governance and national development.
According to the statement, “The DLA remains committed to issue-based politics, internal democracy, and the vision of securing a better future for all Nigerians.”
Addressing delegates and party faithful after his adoption, Memeh expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to provide purposeful and inclusive leadership if elected.
“This is not just a personal victory but a victory for every Nigerian who believes that our nation deserves honest leadership, justice, equity, and progress,” he said.
“We must begin to build a country where the people come first, where governance is driven by competence and accountability, and where every citizen has hope for a better tomorrow.”
Memeh also called on party members to remain united and committed as the party prepares for the electoral contest ahead.
“Our strength lies in our unity. Today’s consensus demonstrates that we can place national interest above personal ambition. We are determined to offer Nigerians a credible alternative built on integrity, development, and inclusiveness,” he added.
Political observers say the adoption of a consensus candidate may help the relatively emerging party avoid internal divisions often associated with prolonged primary contests, while also allowing it to focus early on coalition-building and grassroots mobilisation.
The DLA, which has continued to position itself as a platform for reform-oriented politics, said its focus would remain on addressing key national challenges, including insecurity, unemployment, economic hardship, corruption, and youth inclusion.
Party stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that the emergence of Memeh would strengthen the party’s chances in the elections, describing him as a leader with the capacity to unite Nigerians across political, ethnic, and religious lines.
The presidential primary comes at a time when political parties across the country are intensifying preparations and internal realignments ahead of the next electoral cycle.
