Enugu State, Nigeria — A 21-year-old man, Junior Izuchukwu, has alleged that he and two others were detained, starved, and tortured for nearly three months after refusing to participate in an internet fraud operation, popularly known as “Yahoo Yahoo,” in Enugu State.
The incident reportedly came to light after the escape of three young men identified as Joseph Ibangwu, Junior Izuchukwu, and Miracle Tochukwu, who were allegedly held inside a residential building under inhumane conditions.
According to accounts attributed to the victims, the trio were recruited from Ebonyi State with promises of legitimate employment opportunities in Enugu State. Upon arrival, however, they allegedly discovered that the job offer was linked to a cybercrime syndicate.
Izuchukwu claimed that he was initially deceived by an intermediary before being taken to a residential property located along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway, reportedly within the Helius Estate area.
The victims allege that once inside the building, they were informed that they would be involved in online fraud activities. Those who refused, according to their account, were not allowed to leave.
Izuchukwu further alleged that he was subjected to repeated physical abuse, starvation, and psychological intimidation. He also claimed that the captors demanded a ₦300,000 payment before any release could be considered.
The victims stated that their mobile phones were confiscated, and their movements were monitored within the premises. They also alleged that they were fed once daily under harsh conditions.
The escape reportedly occurred on June 11, 2026, when one of the captives discovered an opportunity to flee, prompting others to follow in a bid for safety. After escaping, they reportedly sought help from residents in the area, who assisted them in alerting authorities.
Security operatives have since been informed, and preliminary reports indicate that a suspect linked to the alleged operation has been arrested and is undergoing interrogation as investigations continue.
