Businessman Aliko Dangote says the Ethiopia-Djibouti Petroleum Products Infrastructure Project will create jobs and open new opportunities for businesses and communities along the project corridor.
Dangote stated this on Thursday during the groundbreaking of the petroleum product storage terminal at the Damerjog Industrial Park (DDIP), Republic of Djibouti.
The project, being developed in partnership with Dangote Group, Ethiopia Investment Holdings and the Djibouti authorities, includes a 120-kilometre pipeline and a combined petroleum storage facility with a capacity of 400 million litres.
Dangote said the project would generate employment during construction and create opportunities for contractors, suppliers, transport operators, service providers and businesses in host communities.
He said skills transfer would also be an important part of the project, with technical and administrative employment opportunities expected to continue beyond the construction phase.
“Jobs are created, and prosperity flows.”
The businessman said the infrastructure would provide opportunities for local businesses to participate in the supply chain while strengthening Djibouti’s position as a regional logistics hub.
For Djibouti, he said the project would support increased port activity and generate additional economic opportunities.
“A win-win outcome for both nations.”
Dangote also said the project would help African economies build the infrastructure required to expand trade and industrial activity.
He noted that investments of this nature could enable African countries to process more resources locally and retain greater economic value on the continent.
“Africa has the capacity, capital, partnership, and determination to solve its infrastructural challenges and gaps.”
The project will connect coastal petroleum storage facilities at Damerjog in Djibouti with inland storage and distribution facilities at Dewele, serving the petroleum supply needs of Ethiopia and Djibouti, and other landlocked markets.
