Deputy Commissioner of Police, Muyiwa Adejobi, has commended a resident of Ekpan, Warri, Delta State, for confronting and disarming an armed robber during a night attack on his home.
Adejobi, a former Force Public Relations Officer, said the incident showed how courage and determination could disrupt criminal operations, but warned members of the public against recklessly confronting armed suspects.
In a social media post on Friday, Adejobi said two armed robbers invaded the resident’s home, with one of them carrying a firearm.
He said the resident engaged the armed suspect, eventually disarmed and subdued him, despite being attacked by the second robber.
According to Adejobi, the second suspect struck the resident on the head with an object, leaving him injured, but his resistance prevented the robbery from proceeding as planned.
The police officer recalled similar incidents he encountered while serving as the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State.
He cited an incident in Ifo where a woman confronted an armed robber who entered her home and reportedly struck him below the belt, forcing him to drop his firearm and flee.

Adejobi also recalled an attack on a popular cold room at Lafenwa Market, Abeokuta, where the female owner and other residents resisted armed attackers and succeeded in dislodging them before the police arrived following a distress call.
“I was the PPRO, Ogun State, at the time, and I addressed the media on these incidents,” Adejobi said.
Reflecting on the incidents, he said criminals did not automatically have an advantage simply because they were armed, stressing the importance of courage and vigilance within communities.
“What do these incidents tell us? Courage matters,” he said.
Adejobi, however, cautioned that confronting armed criminals could have fatal consequences and should not be interpreted as encouragement for residents to take unnecessary risks.
“Of course, confronting armed criminals is extremely dangerous, and no one should recklessly put their life at risk. Where possible, the safest option is to seek cover, raise an alarm and alert the police,” he said.
He said tackling crime effectively requires responsible vigilance from citizens, effective policing and cooperation between communities and security agencies.
Adejobi also referenced Nigerian historical figures including Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and Efunsetan Aniwura while highlighting what he described as the longstanding courage of Nigerians.
He said such courage, when combined with effective policing and community cooperation, could help communities resist criminal activities.
Commending the Ekpan resident for his bravery, Adejobi ended his message on a lighter note by encouraging Nigerians to improve their physical fitness.
“My commendation to the brave man in Ekpan,” he said, before jokingly adding, “And to the rest of us… Make we hit the gym.”
