A fetish priestess who had travelled from the Volta Region to visit her children in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency has broken down in tears while recounting how she allegedly lost two of her grandchildren in this week’s devastating flooding that swept through the area.
The visibly distressed woman was interviewed by JoTV at the site of the disaster, where she gave an emotional account of the tragedy that struck her family during the floods.
Community members present at the scene disclosed that the priestess herself had also been swept away by the rushing floodwaters but was fortunately rescued before she could drown.
The deaths of the two grandchildren, as reported by the woman, had not been officially confirmed by the National Disaster Management Organisation or the Ghana Police Service as of press time.
The incident adds to growing but unverified reports of flood-related fatalities emerging from communities across the Greater Accra Region following this week’s catastrophic rainfall, which also affected Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Achimota Mile 7, East Legon, and the University of Ghana’s Mensah Sarbah Hall, among other areas.
NADMO had not released an official consolidated casualty figure for the week’s flooding disaster at the time of publication.
Authorities including the Interior Ministry have urged residents of affected communities to report casualties and missing persons to the nearest disaster management or police office to enable an accurate accounting of lives lost.
