First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-South zone and inaugurated several development projects in Cross River State.
The First Lady inaugurated the programme in Calabar on Friday as part of efforts to strengthen food security, support vulnerable households and improve access to essential social and healthcare services across the region.
The event was attended by Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, his wife, Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, wives of governors from several states, government officials, traditional rulers and other stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, Senator Oluremi Tinubu said the initiative was designed to provide sustainable support to communities while complementing ongoing efforts of the Federal Government to improve the welfare of Nigerians.
The First Lady also interacted with mothers and children during a visit to the Edina Primary Healthcare Centre in Calabar Municipal Local Government Area, where she engaged beneficiaries of the programme.
As part of her visit, Senator Tinubu also met with traditional rulers in Cross River State, including representatives of the Obong of Calabar and members of the State Traditional Rulers Council.
One of the major highlights of the visit was the presentation of a ₦500 million cheque to the Cross River State Government for victims of the Calabar Mall fire disaster.
The funds were presented by the First Lady on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Governor Bassey Otu and his wife to support victims affected by the disaster.
The First Lady also inagurated the RHI TETFund ICT Experience Centre at the University of Cross River State.
She was joined by Governor Otu, his wife, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, representatives of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency and the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate.
The South-South Community Food Bank Programme is expected to strengthen support for vulnerable families and communities while complementing government efforts to address food insecurity and improve social welfare across the region.
