Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), three months after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Lawal was formally received into the NDC in Abuja on Tuesday by members of the party’s National Working Committee and other officials.
The development was announced by NDC National Leader, Henry Seriake Dickson, who said the party welcomed Lawal and sought to draw on his political experience and extensive network.
In a statement, Henry Seriake Dickson said, “Today, in the company of members of the National Working Committee and other NDC officials, it was a pleasure to receive and welcome respected elder statesman and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir Lawal, to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).”
The party also asked the former SGF to provide leadership and support in coordinating its activities in the North-East and North-Central zones.
According to Dickson, “I requested him to provide leadership and support in coordinating, guiding and strengthening the party in the North-East and the North Central Zone, as well as provide leadership and support for all our candidates.”
The NDC said it would rely on Lawal’s experience and political network to strengthen its structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We are counting on his experience, leadership and extensive network to further strengthen the party,” HSD said.
Lawal’s move to the NDC comes after he resigned from the ADC in June 2026, alleging irregularities in the party’s presidential primary that produced former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as its candidate.
The ADC disputed his allegations.
His latest move places him within the NDC, which is backing the presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso for the 2027 election.
Reports on Tuesday said Lawal declared his support for the ticket after joining the party.
Seriake Dickson added, “Once again I warmly welcome Engr. Babachir Lawal to the NDC and look forward to working with him and other committed Nigerians as we continue to strengthen our party and advance the cause of multiparty democracy and good governance in our country.”
