A proposed fireside chat scheduled for June 15 has been postponed indefinitely following the death of Dr Fezeka Mabona, the younger sister of former South African President Thabo Mbeki.
Naijaonpoint understands that the postponement was announced in a letter sent to invitees by Adebayo Olukoshi, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Amandla Institute.
According to the letter, Mbeki, who was expected to serve as keynote speaker at the event, suffered the personal loss over the weekend and subsequently cancelled his planned trip to Nigeria.
“It is with deep regret that we announce the indefinite postponement of the proposed fireside chat scheduled for 15th June,” Olukoshi stated.
He explained that the development made it impossible for the former South African leader to honour the engagement.
“Over the weekend, our keynote speaker, His Excellency, former South African President Thabo Mbeki, suffered a personal bereavement following the loss of his younger sister and, understandably, has had to cancel his planned trip to Nigeria,” the statement read.
Olukoshi apologised to participants and stakeholders for any inconvenience caused by …ponement.
“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding at this difficult time,” he said.
The Amandla Institute also urged supporters and well-wishers to keep Mbeki and his family in their thoughts and prayers during the period of mourning.
“Kindly join us in keeping President Mbeki and his immediate family in your thoughts and prayers,” the letter added.
No new date has been announced for the event.
