Four people have been killed after a disagreement escalated into communal unrest and a fire outbreak at Power Line Bus Stop, Ikola, in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it received a distress call about the incident at 1:52pm on Thursday and deployed its response team, which arrived at the scene within 25 minutes.
Several makeshift structures were reportedly destroyed by the fire.
According to preliminary findings and accounts from residents, the fire followed a disagreement that escalated into violence in the community.
LASEMA confirmed that four adult males died in the incident, while several others sustained injuries.
Emergency medical assistance was provided at the scene by the Agbado Oke-Odo Ambulance Service, the Nigerian Red Cross Society and other health responders.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service subsequently brought the fire under control and carried out damping-down operations to prevent further spread.
Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, were deployed to restore order.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, led the police operation, while the Chairman of Agbado Oke-Odo LCDA also joined efforts to coordinate with community leaders.
LASEMA said normalcy had been restored in Ikola and neighbouring communities, although security personnel remained on the ground to prevent further violence and protect lives and property.
The agency urged residents to remain calm, avoid reprisals and refrain from circulating unverified information that could heighten tension.
The Lagos State Government condemned the violence and said a full investigation had commenced to determine the immediate and remote causes of the incident.
It added that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, commended emergency responders, security agencies, community leaders and residents for their cooperation during the operation.
