The Federal University Kashere (FUK) has unveiled a book chronicling the leadership journey, academic contributions and institutional impact of its immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Umaru Pate.
The book, titled “Umaru Pate: An Icon of Visionary Leadership, Knowledge, Transformation and Impactful Change,” was presented to the public in Abuja on Thursday.
Speaking at the unveiling, the book’s editor and Pro-Chancellor of FUK, Prof. Williams Olu-Aderounmu, said the publication was conceived to preserve institutional memory and promote exemplary leadership within Nigeria’s higher education system.
Olu-Aderounmu described Pate as a transformative academic leader whose intellectual contributions and administrative reforms strengthened university governance and development.

According to him, the 11-chapter book examines Pate’s early life, academic growth, leadership philosophy, public engagement and institutional transformation initiatives.
He said the publication was beyond a ceremonial tribute, presenting a scholarly interrogation of leadership built on accountability, resilience and service.
“This book is not merely a compilation of essays. It is a carefully curated scholarly testament.
“It is an enduring intellectual monument that captures the light, the philosophy, leadership trajectory, and transformative impact of an extraordinary academic, administrator, reformer, and nation-builder.
“Today’s event transcends ceremonial celebration. It is fundamentally an exercise in academic documentation, institutional memory preservation, and the elevation of exemplary leadership as a subject of scholarly interrogation,” he said.
The pro-chancellor added that Pate’s tenure witnessed improvements in infrastructure, strengthened academic programmes, enhanced research culture and improved staff morale within the university.

Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the National University Commission (NUC), Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, said the publication provided an opportunity to reflect on values that shaped Pate’s career and leadership style.
Ribadu described Pate as a scholar whose influence extended beyond academia to professional media practice, public policy and responsible journalism.
He noted that Pate’s research on media and governance contributed to responsible reporting during elections and security challenges, helping to promote peace and reduce societal tensions.

The NUC boss said Pate also played a significant role in advancing mass communication education through engagement with Nigeria’s university regulatory system, enabling institutions to adapt to a rapidly evolving media landscape.
He said the book would serve as a valuable reference material for scholars, administrators and emerging leaders seeking models of ethical and people-oriented leadership.
In his remarks, Pate expressed appreciation to colleagues, mentors and collaborators, describing the recognition as a collective celebration of shared efforts toward advancing scholarship and national development.

He said leadership should always be guided by transparency, credibility and service to society, while thanking the Federal Government for the opportunity given to him to serve as vice-chancellor.
He urged the university to build on the progress and achievements that had already been established.
