Kano assembly screens deputy governor nominee, Murtala Garo

The Kano State House of Assembly on Thursday screened deputy governor nominee, Murtala Sule Garo, following a request letter by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf seeking the assembly confirmation.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with SolaceBase, the Chief Press Secretary to the Assembly and spokesperson to the Speaker, Kamaluddin Sani Shawai, disclosed that the process began after the state governor formally transmitted a request to the House seeking the screening of the nominee.

Shawai explained that immediately after receiving the governor’s request, the Speaker of the House, Jibril Ismail Falgore, constituted a 12-member committee headed by the Deputy Speaker, Bello Muhammad Butubutua, to carry out the assignment without delay.

He noted that the committee invited Garo to appear before it on Thursday, where the screening exercise was conducted.

“The screening has been successfully carried out, and what remains now is for the committee to submit its report to the House on Monday,” Shawai said.

According to him, the report will be presented during plenary, after which the Speaker will ask members to deliberate on its findings.

He added that if the House expresses satisfaction with the report, the nominee will be confirmed immediately.

“At that point, the Speaker will officially declare that the nominee is fit and proper, thereby granting the governor the approval to swear him in as deputy governor,” he stated.

Providing further insight into the screening process, Shawai said the Assembly follows a standard procedure whenever nominees for commissioner positions or other appointments are forwarded by the governor.

“In addition, the Assembly examines other aspects of a nominee’s life to ensure there are no issues that could raise concerns about their suitability,” Shawai said, noting that the review covers both past and present conduct.
