The Federal Government’s YouthCred programme is designed to give eligible Nigerian youths access to affordable credit while providing financial education and credit-management skills aimed at promoting responsible borrowing.
The initiative is being implemented by the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), a Federal Government development finance institution established to expand access to consumer credit and strengthen Nigeria’s credit infrastructure. CREDICORP has set a broader target of accelerating access to consumer credit for 50 per cent of economically active Nigerians by 2030.
YouthCred was initially introduced through the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), with serving Corps Members forming the first major beneficiary group. The programme has since expanded to employed young Nigerians and, in July 2026, to young entrepreneurs, widening the scope of the initiative beyond its original pilot.
Who can apply for YouthCred?
The programme currently covers three major categories of Nigerian youths:
* NYSC Corps Members
* Employed young Nigerians
* Young entrepreneurs
For employed youths and entrepreneurs, the published eligibility criteria place the applicable age range between 18 and 39 years.

Applicants are required to complete the relevant registration, credit education and verification processes before they can proceed to the financing stage.
The initial NYSC phase recorded more than 51,000 Corps Members enrolled, while more than 30,000 young Nigerians had completed credit education and received financing by the time CREDICORP launched the entrepreneurs’ phase.
What does YouthCred offer?
YouthCred combines access to credit with financial education rather than operating solely as a loan-disbursement programme.
Participants are expected to undergo digital credit education to understand borrowing, repayment, budgeting and credit management. Those who meet the applicable requirements can then become eligible for financing.
The programme is designed to help beneficiaries:
* Access affordable credit
* Improve financial literacy
* Understand responsible borrowing
* Develop credit-management skills
* Build a formal credit history
* Finance personal or productive needs
* Support existing businesses and entrepreneurship
* Improve their ability to manage and repay loans
The emphasis on credit education is intended to ensure that beneficiaries understand their financial obligations before taking on debt.
How much can YouthCred applicants borrow?
The amount available is dependent on the applicant’s category, eligibility, credit assessment and the financing arrangement applicable to the beneficiary.
For the employed-youth phase, CREDICORP announced access to loans of up to N3 million through partner financial institutions. The financing was designed to support needs including mobility, solar systems, rent, household improvements, digital devices and work-related tools.
For young entrepreneurs, the phase launched in July 2026 provides financing reportedly ranging from N200,000 to N2 million for eligible business owners, subject to assessment and the applicable lending conditions.
Applicants should therefore not assume that they will automatically receive the maximum amount available under the programme.
Is collateral required?
YouthCred was designed to improve access to formal credit for young Nigerians who may not have the conventional collateral often required by lenders.
Earlier phases of the initiative for NYSC Corps Members were described as offering collateral-free credit, while the entrepreneurs’ phase was also structured around access to financing without traditional collateral.
However, collateral-free credit does not mean the money is a grant. Beneficiaries are expected to repay the loans according to the terms attached to their individual facilities.
What documents are required?
Applicants must complete the online registration and identity-verification process.
The official YouthCred verification platform requires key identification details, including:
* NYSC number, where applicable
* Bank Verification Number (BVN)
* National Identification Number (NIN)
Additional information or supporting documents may be required depending on the applicant’s category and the financial institution processing the facility.
Applicants should ensure that the information supplied during registration matches their official records because identity verification forms part of the onboarding process.
How to apply for YouthCred 2026
The application process is conducted digitally. Applicants are expected to register, complete the required credit education and undergo verification before proceeding to the credit stage.
The general process involves:
1. Select the appropriate applicant category.
2. Register on the official YouthCred platform.
3. Complete the required credit education programme.
4. Submit the required identification and supporting information.
5. Complete the verification process.
6. Check eligibility and available financing options.
7. Apply for the relevant credit facility.
8. If approved, receive the financing subject to the agreed repayment terms.
Entrepreneurs may also apply through participating Partner Financial Institutions as the programme expands across the country.
Why did the Federal Government introduce YouthCred?
YouthCred forms part of the Federal Government’s broader effort to address limited access to formal credit in Nigeria.
CREDICORP was established in April 2024 with a mandate focused on expanding consumer-credit access, addressing structural barriers in the credit market, mobilising funding and guarantees for financial institutions and supporting the development of Nigeria’s credit infrastructure.
YouthCred applies this objective specifically to young Nigerians, many of whom may have limited access to conventional lending because they lack an established credit history, conventional collateral or stable income patterns.
The programme consequently places emphasis on developing a formal credit culture alongside providing access to financing.
YouthCred and NYSC
Serving NYSC Corps Members were the first major group targeted under YouthCred.
CREDICORP partnered with NYSC to provide Corps Members with credit education and access to financing. The initial phase was intended to help young graduates meet practical financial needs during and after their national service.
The programme was subsequently expanded to other young Nigerians as the Federal Government sought to make structured credit available to a wider youth population.
YouthCred for entrepreneurs
The entrepreneurs’ phase is the third stage in the development of YouthCred.
CREDICORP launched YouthCred for Entrepreneurs in July 2026 to target young Nigerians already running businesses. The initiative is intended to provide working capital and other forms of structured credit while helping entrepreneurs establish stronger formal credit profiles.
The programme also takes into account the structure of many Nigerian small businesses, including enterprises operated by individuals rather than formally incorporated companies.
CREDICORP’s partner-financial-institution network is expected to expand through markets, trade associations and cooperative societies across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
What applicants should know before applying
YouthCred is a credit programme, not a cash grant. Anyone who receives financing is expected to repay the money according to the terms of the facility.
Applicants should also be wary of individuals or unofficial agents claiming they can guarantee approval or demanding unnecessary payments. Registration and verification should be completed through recognised YouthCred channels.
The official YouthCred application platform is [YouthCred](https://app.youthcred.com/signup?utm_source=chatgpt.com), while information on the programme is also available through the [Federal Ministry of Youth Development](https://fmyd.gov.ng/youthcred/?utm_source=chatgpt.com).
With the programme now covering NYSC Corps Members, employed youths and young entrepreneurs, YouthCred has expanded from its original pilot into a wider Federal Government-backed credit initiative aimed at improving young Nigerians’ access to formal financing and strengthening responsible credit use.
