A 48-year-old Ghanaian professor at Southern Illinois University (SIU), Kofi Akamani, has been shot dead at a home in Jackson County, Illinois, in the United States.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO), deputies responded to a shooting reported at about 5 p.m. on Saturday at a location off Lake Road, between Murphysboro and Carbondale.
Akamani was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, where he was pronounced dead from injuries he suffered in the shooting.
He was a professor in SIU Carbondale’s Department of Forestry. The university’s website says he taught courses in forest recreation and conservation social science.
Following an investigation, police arrested Akamani’s 35-year-old wife, Betty Akamani, in connection with the incident. She faces multiple charges related to the death.
The JCSO said the Jackson County Ambulance Service, Jackson County Coroner’s Office and Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office assisted with the investigation.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
