The senator representing Gombe Central Senatorial District, Muhammad Danjuma Goje, has rejected the consensus arrangement adopted by the Gombe State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Naijaonpoint reports that stakeholders of the party, at a meeting on Sunday presided over by Governor Inuwa Yahaya, adopted retired DCP Mohammed Ahmadu Deba as the APC consensus candidate for Goje’s seat.
Goje, who is seeking a fifth term in the Senate, faulted the arrangement in a statement issued by his aide, Barr. Saidu Muazu Kumo.
The senator said the purported consensus meeting involved only the governor and a limited number of aspirants.
He said the meeting “did not include all duly recognised aspirants within the party.”
According to him, several aspirants had validly purchased their expression of interest and nomination forms but were not part of the consensus arrangement held at the Government House.
Goje Cites Electoral Act
Goje said the Electoral Act clearly provides lawful methods for the nomination of candidates by political parties for submission to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He said, “These methods must be strictly adhered to in order to ensure legality and transparency in the electoral process.”
Kumo added that, in line with the electoral framework, the nomination process should be conducted through direct primaries monitored by INEC and relevant security agencies on a date to be fixed by the party.
The senator insisted that any attempt to impose candidates on the party was inconsistent with the current electoral laws in Nigeria.
He maintained that all duly recognised aspirants should be allowed to participate in a transparent nomination process.
