Leading member of the United Party, Hopeson Adorye, has suggested that Ghana may need to consider martial law as a way to fight illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show, Adorye argued that the current measures being used to tackle illegal mining are not strong enough to solve the problem.
“Until we have that political will to say that we are declaring a martial law, there’s no way that we can use just one year, two years, and then fight galamsey. It’s not possible,” he said.
He explained that stronger actions are needed against individuals involved in illegal mining activities, which he said continue to destroy water bodies and farmlands.
Adorye stressed that ending galamsey requires long-term political commitment and tougher interventions beyond short-term campaigns.
