A Nigerian woman has shared a disturbing account of the extreme measures she considered while desperately searching for a child, revealing how vulnerable women can become targets of alleged exploitation.
The woman, whose emotional testimony is circulating online, said years of struggling to have a child exposed her to what she described as a “very dark world” filled with people offering questionable solutions to desperate women.
‘Everybody came to me with solutions’
According to her, her struggle with childlessness was widely known among family members and acquaintances, making her an easy target for people claiming to know spiritual leaders, prayer houses and other individuals with solutions.
“I wanted a child so badly that I accidentally discovered a world, a very dark world in Nigeria,” she said.
“When women are desperate to have babies, there are people who are willing to take advantage of that. I know this because I was one of those desperate women.”
She explained that almost everyone around her seemed to have a recommendation.
Some suggested pastors who had allegedly helped women conceive, while others mentioned mysterious places where people supposedly received miracles after undergoing certain rituals.
At one point, she said she began questioning whether she was doing enough in her search for a child.
That desperation eventually led her to contact a pastor in Abuja, who allegedly told her that “marine spirits” were responsible for her inability to conceive.
The bizarre ritual she was allegedly asked to perform
The woman claimed that after sending money to the pastor, she was instructed to undertake dry fasting and perform a strange midnight ritual.
According to her account, she was told to find a sleeping snail, rub it around her naked body and pray outside at midnight without clothes.
Initially shocked by the instruction, she contacted the person who introduced her to the pastor.
However, rather than discouraging her, the woman allegedly told her that other women had stripped naked at the pastor’s altar while seeking children.
Feeling pressured and believing she might not be serious enough about her search, she eventually went ahead with part of the ritual.
She said she bought a snail identified by a white film covering its opening and followed the instructions after her fast.
However, after returning indoors, she said she suddenly realised how uncomfortable and irrational the experience felt.
“I felt so stupid,” she recalled, adding that she stopped the practice after that day.
‘Desperation is a dangerous place’
The woman said her experience introduced her to other women facing similar struggles, some of whom shared even more disturbing stories.
She recalled meeting a woman who allegedly claimed that a pastor instructed her to come to his church for fasting and later undergo a ritual involving nudity before she could supposedly have a child.
The narrator said such experiences taught her an important lesson about vulnerability.
“Desperation is a very dangerous place to be because people know exactly how vulnerable you are and they can use that vulnerability against you,” she said.
She explained that women struggling with infertility often face intense social pressure and isolation.
According to her, years can pass while they watch friends and relatives raise children, leaving them emotionally vulnerable to anyone promising a solution.
She also criticised the way society sometimes treats women without children, saying some are excluded from social activities and constantly reminded of their struggles.
Alleged illegal adoption offer raises concerns
Her search for a child also reportedly exposed her to questionable adoption arrangements.
She recalled being told about an alleged arrangement in Port Harcourt where she could pay ₦4 million and receive a newborn baby directly from a hospital.
According to the proposal she described, she would not meet the biological mother and would allegedly receive no official adoption documentation.
She said she was instructed to collect the child and leave the city immediately.
The arrangement immediately raised suspicions.
“What kind of adoption is that?” she recalled asking.
The woman later explored another adoption opportunity and was allegedly asked to pay ₦1.2 million for a baby, in addition to money for documentation.
She said photographs of babies were sent to her, and she selected a baby girl because she was excited about finally becoming a mother.
However, she became increasingly suspicious after repeatedly requesting official adoption papers.
According to her, those handling the arrangement allegedly continued giving excuses about the documentation and proposed a complicated process for transporting the child.
Her insistence on obtaining legal documents eventually made her reconsider the entire arrangement.
A warning about exploiting vulnerable women
The woman’s story has drawn attention to the emotional struggles faced by people trying to conceive and the dangers of seeking solutions from unverified individuals.
Her account highlights how desperation can make vulnerable people susceptible to alleged spiritual manipulation, financial exploitation and potentially illegal child trafficking schemes disguised as adoption.
While many couples struggling with fertility face genuine emotional and social challenges, experts and advocates often stress the importance of seeking medically recognised fertility care and following legally approved adoption procedures.
The woman said her experiences changed her understanding of desperation and why some people take extraordinary risks when searching for something they have wanted for years.
Her story serves as a reminder that behind many questionable decisions may be individuals facing deep emotional pain and people willing to exploit that vulnerability.
