African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore has said there will be no official Office of the First Lady if he is elected president in the 2027 general election.
Sowore made the declaration during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, explaining that the position of First Lady is not recognised by the Nigerian Constitution.
The AAC candidate said becoming president would not affect his marriage but maintained that his wife would not occupy an official position because of his presidency.
Sowore questions public spending on First Lady’s office
Sowore said women would still have a voice in his administration but questioned the use of public funds to maintain an office he considers unconstitutional.
He said, “There is no office of First Lady in the Nigerian Constitution. Becoming the president will not abolish my marriage, but I will not have the office of First Lady.”
He further stated, “Women will be heard, but I don’t believe that you need a first lady who is holding an unconstitutional position and just wasting money that is meant for progress and projects.”
AAC candidate outlines other proposed changes
Sowore also said his proposed administration would seek to reduce the cost of governance, including ending security votes for state governors.
“I am just telling you as a matter of policy that there won’t be an office of the first lady under the Sowore presidency,” he said.
The remarks come as political parties and their candidates prepare for the 2027 presidential election, with the Independent National Electoral Commission having published the final list of presidential candidates.
