A Nigerian man has stirred widespread reactions online after openly admitting that he ended a relationship over what he described as “unrealistic” wedding expectations.
In a viral video circulating across social media platforms, the man claimed he was proud of his decision to walk away after his partner allegedly demanded a lavish ₦50 million wedding despite having little personal savings.
Outrage Over Wedding Expectations
“I just scattered a relationship this morning and I’m so proud of it,” he said. “How can a woman want a 50 million naira wedding? That is the least she’s given to you and she doesn’t have 1.5 million in her account.”
The man questioned the financial imbalance in such expectations, arguing that marriage expenses should not fall solely on men. He warned that men who accept full financial responsibility without support risk long-term consequences.
“My guy, you are a fool if you keep thinking that the wedding is your whole responsibility as a man,” he added.
Debate on Shared Financial Responsibility
He went further to suggest that modern relationships require shared investment, both emotionally and financially. According to him, lack of contribution from one partner can weaken commitment.
“The reason why these women are leaving you guys is because they are not investing. Anywhere somebody invests, their heart will be there,” he stated.
The speaker emphasised that traditional gender roles are gradually fading, urging men to have honest financial conversations early in relationships.
“When you start dating a woman in 2026, make her understand, my dear, these gender role things are blurring out,” he said.
“Marriage Is a Partnership”
He also described marriage as a form of partnership that requires mutual contribution, stressing that both parties should support the family financially regardless of income level.
“My dear, even though it’s the small that you have, bring a percentage of your small, invest in the business. The family, yes, it’s a business, it’s transactional. Invest in the relationship,” he said.
Reflecting on past generations, he warned against repeating what he sees as the financial mistakes of older men who carried the burden of entire families alone.
“A lot of them are not where they are supposed to be right now because they took the whole responsibility of the family,” he noted.
