Businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has promised the Black Stars a special bonus if they defeat Croatia and qualify for the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Mahama announced the reward during a visit to Ghana’s training camp in Rhode Island on Thursday.
He was part of a government delegation led by Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Victor Smith. The delegation also included Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The team delivered a message of support from President John Dramani Mahama ahead of Ghana’s important final Group L match.
Speaking to the players and technical team, Ibrahim Mahama praised coach Carlos Queiroz for improving the Black Stars in a short period.
“I’m very proud because you came in at a shorter time, and you’ve been able to put the boys together. Wonderful performance,” Mahama told the Portuguese coach.
He then encouraged the players to finish strongly against Croatia and promised them a personal financial reward if they reach the knockout stage.
“I have a much better bonus for you than the taxpayers because they have to go to Parliament. I don’t have to go to Parliament. Please do us proud,” Mahama said.
The Black Stars have started the tournament strongly, winning their opening match against Panama before drawing 0-0 with England.
A win against Croatia would secure Ghana’s place in the next round of the competition.
Mahama has also supported Ghana’s World Cup campaign financially, with his company contributing US$5 million to a national fundraising effort earlier this year.
The latest promise is expected to motivate the team as Ghana aims to continue its impressive run at the tournament.
