In a major step toward strengthening security and combating violent crimes in Imo State, the Nigeria Police Force, Imo State Command, officially launched the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) at the Command Headquarters, Owerri on Friday.

The event, themed “Tackling Violent Crime, Upholding Citizens’ Rights for a Safer Imo State,” brought together top security officials, government representatives, stakeholders, and members of the public.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Audu Garba Bosso, described the launch as a strategic move aimed at improving public safety, professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights in policing operations across the state.

According to him, the VCRU was established to respond swiftly and professionally to serious crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, cult-related violence, terrorism, and other capital offences.

He emphasized that the unit would operate strictly within the provisions of the law while maintaining the dignity and rights of citizens.

“The VCRU represents a forward-looking policing strategy designed to respond to contemporary security challenges with speed, precision, and professionalism,” he stated.

The Commissioner further outlined the core principles guiding the unit, including zero tolerance for corruption, accountability at all levels, restoration of public trust, and strict avoidance of interference in civil matters except where criminal activities are involved.

Governor Hope Uzodimma, who was ably represented at the occasion by Assistant Commissioner of Police Adam Shaba, commended the initiative and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting security agencies in ensuring the safety of lives and property in Imo State.

He noted that peace and security remain essential for development, investment, education, and social harmony, stressing that the government would continue collaborating with security agencies to make Imo State safer for all residents.

The police command also announced the establishment of a Civilian Oversight Board made up of credible stakeholders to promote transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the operations of the VCRU.

Residents of the state were encouraged to cooperate with the unit by providing timely and credible information that would aid security operations and help curb violent crimes within communities.

The launch marks a new phase in the Imo State Police Command’s operational strategy, focusing on intelligence-driven policing, professionalism, and community partnership in the fight against violent crime.
