The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced intensified preparations for the 2027 General Election, with a renewed commitment to ensuring that no eligible Nigerian is left behind in the electoral process.
The Commission said it is working towards elections that are credible, inclusive, participatory and reflective of the will of the people.
The commitment was reinforced at a joint implementation meeting of INEC’s Voter Education and Publicity Department and Gender and Inclusivity Department, which brought together Heads of Voter Education from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The meeting followed the conclusion of the recent off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states and was convened to coordinate voter education and public engagement activities ahead of 2027.
Speaking at the meeting, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said INEC’s immediate priority was to develop effective information and communication strategies capable of encouraging Nigerians of voting age to participate actively in the election.
Haruna described voter education as both simple and complex, noting that it revolves around key questions of why citizens should vote, who should be targeted, what information should be provided, how messages should be delivered and when engagement should take place.
He said addressing these questions across Nigeria’s diverse population would require careful planning, professionalism and sustained engagement.
According to him, the principal objective of voter education is to educate Nigerians on how to participate in elections and persuade eligible citizens of the importance of exercising their civic responsibility by choosing their leaders.
He, however, stressed that voting remains voluntary.
Haruna identified women, youths, the media, civil society organisations, persons with disabilities and other stakeholder groups as key audiences whose information needs must be properly understood and addressed.
He directed voter education and publicity officers to ensure that every message issued by the Commission was accurate, truthful, timely, transparent and consistent.

He also stressed the need to select communication channels based on the target audience and nature of the information being conveyed.
The National Commissioner called for regular monitoring and evaluation of INEC’s communication activities to determine their effectiveness and identify areas requiring improvement.
He also urged officers responsible for voter education and publicity to continually improve their communication skills and deepen their understanding of the electoral process.
Haruna emphasised the need for simple, clear and civil communication, alongside a sound knowledge of the Constitution, electoral laws, INEC regulations and guidelines, as well as relevant legislation, including the Freedom of Information and Data Protection laws.
He said compliance with INEC’s communication policy would be critical to effective information management and to building and sustaining public confidence in the electoral process.
Haruna acknowledged the scale of the task ahead, saying preparations for the 2027 General Election must be accelerated.
He expressed confidence that the implementation meeting would provide the necessary direction for the two departments to address existing gaps and translate approved programmes into practical activities across the country.
The Commission said the initiative forms part of its broader preparations to ensure that eligible Nigerians, regardless of gender, age, location or disability, have access to accurate information needed to participate meaningfully in the 2027 elections.
