The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday conducted a sensitisation campaign across major markets in Benin City, urging residents to participate in the third and final phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in the state.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Obo Effanga, who led the exercise, said the campaign was aimed at informing eligible residents who are yet to register that the exercise would end on July 10, with only 10 days remaining.
According to him, the registration, which commenced on May 11, provides an opportunity for those who have turned 18 to register, as well as for voters with issues related to their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to resolve them.
“This is the third and final phase of the registration.
“After today, we have just 10 days left for people to register, and that is why we are intensifying awareness,” he said.
Effanga added that individuals who had lost their voter cards, required replacements, or were seeking fresh registration could do so before the closing date.
He explained that markets were selected for the sensitisation campaign to enable the commission reach a large number of people engaged in buying and selling activities.
“It is an opportunity to reach people in large numbers where they are. That is why we took this approach, moving through major markets in Benin,” he said.
The REC noted that registration would take place on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. until July 10.
He urged all eligible residents to take advantage of the remaining period to register.
Effanga said the market outreach forms part of INEC’s strategy to boost participation in the final phase of the CVR exercise.
