The Katsina Golf Club on Saturday defeated their hosts, the Kano Golf Club 1908, with a score of 4½ against 2½, in a one-day friendly inter-club matchplay, held at the Kano Golf Course.
The 36 Golfers (18 from each team), holding various handicap rankings (a numerical measure of a golfer’s demonstrated ability), were paired in twos and each played 18 holes.
Speaking at a brief impressive closing ceremony of the tournament held at the Kano Golf Club House, the Captain of Kano Golf Club, Mr David Emeana, said matchplay, which wasn’t held in Kano for a long time, was organized as part of the programs of his administration to uplift the game and promote unity in diversity.
Emeana announced plans to invite golf clubs from other geopolitical zones to inter-club matchplays with Kano Golf Club.
He said other than the health benefits derived by the players who play the game, Golf also develops commerce, boosts the economy, promotes tourism and cements unity among the various diverse people of the nation.

According to him, Kano Golf Club will soon organize a national golf competition to mark the new Captain’s Inauguration to be followed with zonal, national and international tournaments including Pro-Am.
He appealed to all members of Kano Golf Club to cooperate and support his administration in its agenda to improve the Golf Course and other facilities, and to take the game to greater heights.
Responding on behalf of the winning visiting team after receiving a Giant Trophy from Mr David Emeana, the Captain of Katsina Golf Club, Major General Junaid S. Bindawa (Rtd), said the game of Golf is fast becoming popular in Katsina, especially among the Youth and the Elderly.
He said other than Polo, which was introduced and first played in Katsina in 1924, and Football, which is a worldwide popular sport, the next game that is fast gaining ground in Katsina is Golf.
General JS Bindawa said Katsina Golf Club has concluded preparations to host major national tournaments, one of which will be sponsored by the State Government.
