Iran-US War: Iran says it shot down US MQ-9 drone, fired at fighter jet after fresh strikes escalate tensions

Tensions between Iran and the United States have increased after Iran claimed it shot down a US drone and fired at a fighter jet following recent American military strikes.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it reserved the “legitimate and definite” right to respond to any ceasefire violations. It also claimed its air defence systems destroyed a US MQ-9 drone.

Iran Says Fighter Jet Entered Its Airspace

According to Iranian media reports, the IRGC also fired at a fighter jet that allegedly entered Iranian airspace. The claims have not been independently verified.

This comes shortly after the United States said it carried out “self-defence strikes” targeting Iranian missile sites and boats.

US Says Strikes Were Defensive

A spokesperson for the US Central Command said American forces conducted strikes in southern Iran to protect US troops from threats.

The US claimed the targets included missile systems and boats allegedly preparing hostile action. However, full details of the operation were not released.

Supreme Leader Issues Warning

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei issued a statement saying regional countries would no longer act as protection for US military bases.

He said the United States was losing influence in the region and its power was weakening over time. His message was released during Eid al-Adha through state media.

Explosions Reported in Southern Iran

Iranian state media reported loud explosions near the port city of Bandar Abbas. Authorities said the situation later returned to normal and investigations were underway.

Peace Talks Continue Despite Conflict

Despite rising tensions, both sides are still engaged in negotiations to extend a ceasefire.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said discussions were ongoing but would take time due to disagreements over key issues.

US President Donald Trump said talks were progressing but warned of further strikes if negotiations fail.

Iran and the US remain divided over issues including Iran’s nuclear program and control of strategic waterways like the Strait of Hormuz.
